Cinq ans ! Il aura fallu cinq ans à ce fantôme de J.J Cale pour enregistrer "Travel Log". On craignait que les mélodies raffinées de l'auteur d'After Midnight et de Cocaïne ne bercent plus jamais nos longues nuits d'insomnie. On allait même jusqu'à se demander s'il ne s'était pas endormi pour toujours dans sa caravane plantée au cœur d'un champ de l'Oklaoma. C'était mal connaître le personnage. Plus cool que J.J Cale, tu meurs ! Quoi de plus naturel pour lui que de briser le silence, comme si de rien n'était, avec quatorze titres d'une finesse époustouflante. La voix toujours embrumée, le doigté toujours plus agile sur le manche de sa six cordes magique, il nous plonge, avec un flegme déroutant, dans ces ambiances feutrées dont lui seul a le secret. Chaque note de guitare est choisie avec le plus grand soin afin de construire des mélodies toutes plus riches les unes que les autres. Un régal de pureté. Rien n'est laissé au hasard. Le feling prend le pas sur d'éventuels dérapages chinois ( Shanhaid ) ou mexicain ( Tijuana ) qui s'insèrent discrètement entre les accords jazzy et bluesy. Ce vieux renard de Jim Keltner ne s'y est d'ailleurs pas trompé en apportant sa contribution au voyage musical d'un J.J Cale sans lequel Mark Knopfler et Dire Straits n'auraient probablement jamais existé.
